Some pictures of my August 2008 trip to Finland and Estonia.  It was
my first visit to Finland since 2002, and I had certainly missed being
there.  It was great to be back and see my friends there, as well as to
enjoy some time in an authentic Finnish sauna, some cold Lapin Kulta
(popular Finnish beer) and makkaraa (Finnish sausage).

My brother Scott travelled with me - it was his first time outside of the
country and he had a great time.  We spent most of our time in
Helsinki, with a day trip by ferry to Tallinn, Estonia.

I will post more pictures as I have time.  I love to take pictures and will
be putting some of the best pictures from various countries on here
over the next few weeks.
Senaatintori (Senate Square)
Helsinki, Finland

Posing at the statue of Tsar
Alexander II with the beautiful
Tuomiokirkko (Lutheran
Cathedral) in the background.

The square, designed by
architect Carl Ludvig Engel
features spectacular buildings on
either side of the cathedral and is
a site to behold.

It is my favorite spot to visit in all
of Europe and a place that I
spend a lot of time at while in
Helsinki.
Tower of the Olympic Stadium
Helsinki, Finland

Here is a secret: I am petrified of
heights! I mean REALLY afraid of
them!

But the views from the tower at
the Olympic Stadium are
spectacular.  We stayed at the
youth hostel here (former athlete
dorms).

The stadium was built for the
1940 summer games, which were
cancelled due to World War II.

The games were held in August
of 1952 here.
A Pub
Tallinn, Estonia

I am sure that I have the name of
this pub somewhere in my
backpack (which is not fully
unpacked!).  It had a great house
ale and a wonderful outdoor
covered deck along the street.

It was raining on and off while in
Tallinn, so Scott and I took shelter
here and enjoyed a few draft
beers while waiting for the rain to
stop.

Tallink 's M/S Superstar
Tallinn-Helsinki

I am posing on the deck of the
M/S Superstar, operated by
Tallink.

The Helsinki-Tallinn route takes
just over two hours and there is
plenty to do on board - like go to
the Duty Free Shop (great for
cheap booze and chocolate!), or
even sit in one of the on board
pubs, or up on deck, and enjoy a
cold drink while watching the Baltic
Sea roll by.

This particular picture was taken
as the ferry left Tallinn for the
return trip to Helsinki.  That is the
Port of Tallinn in the distance
behind me.
