The Tamarack was a boarding house from 1927 to 1947, after which it
became the Tamarack Lodge.   It was one of the many resorts considered
part of the borscht belt and was a popular destination for Jewish vacationers.
Pulitzer Prize winning author Herman Wouk waited tables in the children's
dining room during the 1930s.

Many popular entertainers appeared at the Tamarack, including Danny Kaye,
Jerry Lewis, Cream, The Who, and Janis Joplin.  During Passover in 1994 a
large fire wiped out part of the building and displaced guests.

One of the claims associated with the property is that about murder in 1957.
It is alleged that a woman was murdered here by her jealous lover, who is
thought to have been an employee in one of the kitchens.  The crime is said to
have been particularly brutal as it was committed using a hatchet.  The story
further states that the woman's body went undiscovered for a day or so after
the crime.   This alleged crime has not been confirmed.

Another claim is that approximately 157 people died at the Tamarack. This is
not confirmed.  However, we have to remember that the Tamarack (like the
other resorts) was a small city with thousands of guests and employees on any
given day. Deaths by natural causes, accidents, illness and even suicide and
homicide, would not be uncommon or unexpected. Even the alleged number
of 157 deaths is not, in my opinion, unreasonable considering that over the
course of many decades tens of thousands of guests stayed there.  For
example, if 10,000 individual persons worked at, or visited the Tamarack,
over the course of the resorts history, 157 deaths would represent less than
2%.  I picked the number 10,000 arbitrarily - I do not know how many
individuals were here over that time and it is probably higher.  My point is that
death in and of itself would not be uncommon or paranormal in nature in this
type of place

The Tamarack Lodge, located in Greenfield Park, New York, was one of the
many Catskill resorts in Ulster and Sullivan Counties popular for decades with
tourists from New York City.  Sadly, the Tamarack, like so many of the other
Catskill destinations, is an abandoned shell of what it once was.
